Communication is Both Verbal and Non-verbal

As you proceed through this course, it is important to think about both verbal and non-verbal communication.
Research has shown that the majority of communication is non-verbal. Examples of non-verbal communication include facial expressions, body language, eye contact, and tone of voice. In a popularly cited 7-38-55 rule of personal communication by Dr. Albert Mehrabian, 7% of communication is words, 38% is the tone of voice, and 55% is other non-verbal forms of communication. Although the actual percentages may be up for debate, it conveys that communication is not simply the words you speak.
