Patau syndrome (trisomy 13) is the third most common trisomy and occurs in approximately every 10,000 births. Infants typically die within the first month. Those that do survive have considerable intellectual disability, seizures, and fail to thrive. Babies with trisomy 13 usually have distinctive features, severe intellectual disability, and other physical developmental problems
Patau syndrome is caused by having an extra copy of chromosome number 13. The syndrome was first described in 1960.
