A physician-directed organization, COLA was founded in 1988 as a private alternative to help laboratories stay in compliance with CLIA. CMS granted COLA deeming authority in 1993. COLA is the only CMS-deemed clinical laboratory accreditor to achieve ISO 9001:2015 certification.
