Group 6—Psilocybin (Psilocin and Other Indole Derivatives)

Psilocybin is a psychoactive toxin. The onset of symptoms usually occurs within one hour following ingestion and lasts approximately 4 to 6 hours. Symptoms include euphoria, visual and religious hallucinations, as well as heightened perception. However, some people experience fear, agitation, confusion, and schizophrenic-like symptoms. Nausea and vomiting are sometimes associated with ingestion but usually occur earlier that the psychological effects. The only deaths reported have been in children outside the United States. Psilocubin is the principle toxin found in the genera Panaeolus, Gymnopilus, and Psilocybe.
