Regulation of Lactation

The pituitary also provides signals that control the production of milk in breastfeeding mothers.

Mammotroph cells secrete the hormone Prolactin (PRL), which provides the signal for mammary gland development, maturity, and function. In concert with oxytocin released from the neurohypophysis in response to breast stimulation by the nursing infant, the process of lactation is under the regulation of the pituitary.
