The Location of the Pituitary

The pituitary gland is housed in a protective bony cavity called the sella turcica (or Turkish saddle) located at the base of the skull in a highly vascularized area of the brain. Blood is supplied from branches of the internal carotid artery, while venous blood drains via a portal system originating from the hypothalamus. This relationship between the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland is important to note.
