Case Study 1: Initial Information and Testing

Patient: A 63-year-old African-American patient with a history of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and multiple pregnancies, who has never been transfused.
Presenting Problem: The patient was experiencing acute anemia due to recurrent GI bleeding episodes and the phsyician wanted to transfuse 2 units of blood as soon as possible. The initial antibody screen was panreactive in gel, so the transfusion services lab reflexed to an antibody panel with an autocontrol in PEG:
