Cadmium: Laboratory Testing

Blood cadmium:
Although cadmium testing is not common, blood is the preferred specimen for assessing long-term accumulations. As with other heavy metals, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is used to measure cadmium in whole blood.
Urine cadmium:
Although cadmium is excreted in the urine, urine testing is reserved for detecting acute occupational exposure. Because cadmium poisoning causes renal damage, creatinine should also be measured; kidney damage due to cadmium exposure will show increased cadmium excretion relative to creatinine.
