Clinical Significance of Leukocyte Esterase in Urine

A positive leukocyte esterase test is often accompanied by a positive nitrite test and bacteria, indicating a bacterial urinary tract infection.
A positive leukocyte esterase test without bacteria could indicate interstitial nephritis (inflammation of renal tissues) or an infection caused by yeast, Trichomonas vaginalis, or Chlamydia trachomatis.
