Clinical Significance of Nitrite in Urine

Early detection of bacteria is important to prevent cystitis from developing into inflammation or infection involving the kidney and renal pelvis. The nitrite test is used to screen individuals at risk for developing urinary tract infections, such as people with diabetes, recurrent infections, or who are pregnant.
The test is also useful in evaluating the success of antibiotic therapy used to treat a bladder infection.
