In the United States, participation in a proficiency testing program is required by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA), if a laboratory is performing testing that is not classified as waived testing.
Accrediting organizations also require participation in a proficiency testing program.
Because the results must be returned to a testing center for comparison, there is a delay between the time of testing and the receipt of any statistical summary.
