Clinical Classifications

Fungi can be grouped using various classifications. Clinically, they are grouped by where they infect the body:
  • Superficial mycoses: Occurring in the outermost layers such as skin and hair.
  • Cutaneous mycoses: Infecting the skin, nails and hair; they are also known as dermatomycosis.
  • Subcutaneous mycoses: Involving the deep layers of skin and sometimes muscle.
  • Systemic mycoses: Attack the tissues and organ systems.
