Epidemiology: TB and LTBI in the World

Epidemiology (distribution and burden of disease) globally is reported as:
TB disease incidence:
In 2020, 9.9 million people were reported to have TB disease globally. Eight high-burden countries (Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, and South Africa) account for two-thirds of this total. Globally, TB incidence is falling at about 2% per year (WHO, 2021). Each year, approximately 1.6 million people die of active TB disease (CDC, 2021).
LTBI prevalence:
According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2015), one-third of the world’s population has latent TB infection (LTBI). These individuals are not yet symptomatic and cannot transmit the bacteria.
