Thyroid Gland

Central and essential to the endocrine system is the thyroid gland. The thyroid produces and releases hormones that regulate the metabolism of dietary sources of fats and carbohydrates, and help to regulate energy levels, body temperature, and to a lesser degree, play a role in fertility and bone health.
As will be discussed in greater detail, the thyroid gland is under the direct control of the pituitary gland and hypothalmus, and provides feedback to these endocrine control centers as to need for production of thyroid hormones.
