Conclusion

Viral hepatitis continues to be a significant public health problem in the US and abroad. As mentioned, some viral hepatitis strains are increasing in prevelence. The laboratory will continue to play a crucial role in the differential diagnosis of hepatitis. The acute viral hepatitis panel is a vital tool in diagnosing or ruling out the most common forms of viral hepatitis (HAV, HBV and HCV). As new medications continue to be approved, particularly for HCV, the laboratory's role in treatment and monitoring will only increase.
